Kano Traditional Rulers Warned Against Partisan Politics

The Nigerian Democracy Working Group has urged traditional rulers to remain above partisan politics and allow the rule of law to prevail in Kano State.

The group made the call in a statement signed by its Assistant National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Abubakar Sa’ad, on Wednesday.

The statement followed allegations of the involvement of the 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, in an anti-APC rally in the state.

The group alleged that posters and banners of President Bola Tinubu and Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, were pulled down during the rally.

It described the reported incidents as “unfortunate and unacceptable”.

The group called on traditional rulers to maintain neutrality and avoid actions that could heighten political tension in the state.

“We call on all traditional leaders to remain above partisan politics and allow the rule of law to prevail,” the statement said.

The group also urged security agencies to protect lives, property and political materials across Kano.

“We call on security agencies to ensure the protection of lives, property, and political materials in Kano State,” it said.

The organisation stressed that although citizens have the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, such rights should not be used to justify the destruction of property or intimidation.

“While every citizen has the right to peaceful assembly, that right does not extend to the destruction of property, intimidation of government, or the creation of fear among law-abiding citizens,” it said.

The group further appealed to residents and political actors to maintain peace and avoid actions capable of escalating tension.

“Kano will not be intimidated. Kano will remain peaceful. And Kano will continue to move forward under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement added.
