The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has clarified the different admission statuses candidates may encounter on its Central Admissions Processing System, CAPS.

The Board explained the meanings of “Not Admitted,” “Admission in Progress” and “Admitted” in an explainer video released on Thursday.

JAMB also urged candidates awaiting admission to regularly monitor their CAPS profiles because their status may change as institutions complete the admission process.

Addressing the “Not Admitted” status, the Board explained that it does not necessarily represent the end of a candidate’s admission prospects.

JAMB said, “This simply means you’ve not been offered admission yet. However, it does not necessarily mean you will not be admitted.”

Candidates whose CAPS continues to display “Not Admitted” were therefore advised to remain patient and keep checking the platform for possible changes.

The Board explained that “Admission in Progress” generally indicates that an institution has initiated the process of offering admission to a candidate, but the necessary approvals have not yet been completed.

JAMB said, “This means your institution’s admission officer has proposed you for admission, but awaiting the head of institution’s recommendation.”

The Board noted that the same status could also be displayed after the head of an institution has recommended a candidate, where the proposed admission is still awaiting JAMB’s final decision.

JAMB, however, warned candidates not to interpret “Admission in Progress” as confirmation that they had secured a place.

The Board stressed, “Please note that ‘Admission in Progress’ does not mean automatic admission.”

It explained that even after an institution recommends a candidate, JAMB could still decline the offer if the candidate does not satisfy the relevant admission requirements.

JAMB stated, “This is because the recommended offer could still be disapproved by the Board if you don’t meet the prerequisite requirements.”

According to the Board, the “Admitted” status is reached only after JAMB has formally approved the admission recommended by the institution.

Explaining the final stage, JAMB said, “This is the point you get the message, ‘CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE BEEN OFFERED ADMISSION’.”

Candidates who receive the official admission offer through CAPS will then have the option of accepting or rejecting the offer on the platform.

The Board further explained that admission statuses should not be regarded as permanent until the process is concluded.

JAMB said, “Remember, your CAPS status will keep changing as the admission process continues until the final stage where you print your admission letter,”

The Board consequently advised candidates to continue monitoring their CAPS accounts and obtain admission-related information only through its official communication channels.
