Beyond his death, how Olu Jacobs helped shape a Nollywood generation
The death of veteran actor Olu Jacobs has brought renewed attention to a career that stretched far beyond the characters he played on screen.
Rather than simply remembering him as a celebrated Nollywood actor, colleagues and admirers are now reflecting on the influence he had on Nigerian acting and the generations of performers who came after him.
Jacobs built a career that crossed several stages of the entertainment world. After studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, he worked in British theatre and television before returning to Nigeria and becoming one of the most recognisable faces in the country’s film industry.
His commanding voice and stage-trained style made him particularly memorable in roles portraying traditional rulers, fathers, chiefs and other figures of authority. But his contribution went beyond acting. Together with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, Jacobs was involved in building institutions connected to film production, distribution and performing-arts education.

That influence is now being highlighted by actors from different generations. Segun Arinze described Jacobs as one of the great pillars of Nigerian and African acting, while Funke Akindele remembered him for supporting and encouraging younger talents.
His international career also set him apart. Before Nollywood became a globally recognised film industry, Jacobs had already appeared in British television productions and international films, giving him an unusual career that connected Nigerian performing arts with audiences beyond Africa.
For many Nigerians, therefore, the conversation surrounding Olu Jacobs is no longer only about his final days. It is about what remains after more than five decades of work—the actors he inspired, the standards he represented and the place he helped create for Nigerian stories on screen.
As tributes continue to pour in, one message is becoming clear: Olu Jacobs’ story is not ending with his final appearance. His greatest role may ultimately be the influence he leaves behind.
