NNPCL extends N66/litre petrol discount, insists it’s not subsidy
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited says the N66 per litre petrol discount at its retail stations has been extended to 31 October 2026.
Chief corporate communications officer of the company, Andy Odeh, stated this on Friday, saying the measure is customer relief and not a return of fuel subsidy.
The NNPC launched the discount as an Independence Day promotion, with the N66 figure tied to Nigeria’s 66th anniversary of independence. It applied to every litre of petrol bought at participating NNPC Retail stations, and customers had to pay through the NNPC Fuel App to get it.
The offer was originally valid from 1 to 7 October.
NNPC Limited said the discount will now continue nationwide until the end of the month. It described the measure as direct relief for customers at a time of elevated global crude oil prices, which it linked to the conflict in the Middle East.
The statement followed comments by the minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy, Taiwo Oyedele, who said the discount is not a subsidy and is funded from NNPC Retail’s own margin, not from the Federation Account. NNPC Limited urged the public to disregard any interpretation of the discount as a restoration of subsidy.
The company said the discount applies only to NNPC Retail outlets.
