Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to openly address questions surrounding his past, arguing that public leadership demands transparency, courage and accountability.

Obi made the remarks in a post on his X platform on Monday, August 31, 2026, where he reflected on what he described as the importance of integrity and openness among those entrusted with the nation’s highest offices.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate expressed concern over what he described as attempts to prevent public scrutiny of records connected to the President’s past, insisting that Nigerians deserved answers to matters of legitimate public interest.

“It is profoundly embarrassing that we have reached a point where a sitting President is asking a foreign court to withhold records concerning his past, particularly records relating to matters of legitimate public interest,” Obi said.

According to him, occupying the office of President comes with an obligation to confront difficult questions rather than avoid them.

Obi argued that leadership was not about projecting perfection but demonstrating the courage and humility to acknowledge mistakes, offer explanations where necessary and seek forgiveness when wrongdoing had occurred.

He maintained that a leader’s moral authority could be strengthened when such a leader accepted responsibility rather than attempting to shield controversial aspects of his past from public examination.

The former governor particularly raised concerns about unresolved questions relating to educational credentials, arguing that issues involving a leader’s foundational education, including primary and secondary school records, should be clearly and credibly addressed.

“Nigerians deserve clear, credible, and verifiable explanations, especially when such had been submitted in the past,” he said.

Obi said the issue went beyond political rivalry, warning that the standards set by those occupying the Presidency could have far-reaching consequences for the country.

He noted that Nigeria’s young population, including millions of children currently in schools, looked to national leaders as examples of the values that society should uphold.

According to him, the Presidency should represent the highest standards of integrity, accountability, transparency and ethical conduct.

While acknowledging that no individual has a perfect past, Obi said the true test of leadership was the willingness to confront one’s history honestly, make amends where necessary and place the interest of the nation above personal ambition.

He questioned when members of Nigeria’s political class would fully appreciate the difference between temporary political ambition and the enduring interests of the country.

“The Presidency is an office held for a season; the moral standards established by those who occupy it can influence generations,” Obi said.

He further declared, “Nigeria is greater than any one person, and the integrity of the Republic must always come before the interests of the individual.”

Obi, who reaffirmed his commitment to Nigeria and expressed optimism about the country’s future, ended his message with his familiar political refrain: “A New Nigeria is Possible.”
